As I write this newsletter to you, I am sitting pondering 30 years ago when I was pregnant with my oldest son. You see my son, Jamie, (photo attached) turns 30 years old tomorrow. My waters had just broken and I was walking around the house knowing something was wrong with my baby. As a first time Mum, I had no idea what it was like to be in labour. In fact, I did not even know my waters broke until I rang the hospital to say I was ‘leaking’. How naive was I? You would have thought as a nurse I would have known.

Off to hospital and an examination indicated I needed an emergency caesarean. Then Jamie was rushed to ICU where he stayed for a while. That was the start of a huge learning journey for me and my husband as we were about to discover Jamie was born with many medical problems that would require 3 years’ worth of hospitalisation, surgery, and lots of care. The first year of his life was resuscitating him as he stopped beathing when he slept. Long nights and days no sleep, eating or no taking care of me.

Today, I am super proud of Jamie as he is able to do for himself what many said he couldn’t. He still has challenges in life and manages these so well. His Autism allows me to see the world so differently. He was and is still my teacher. Thanks to all that remember Jamie when he used to come on my events.
